With the advent of synchro monsters, duelists have found new and innovate ways of getting out big monsters. Goyo Guardian is one such example of a powerful synchro which has now been limited to 1 due to its easy summoning conditions, high attack and effect. Stardust Dragon is another popular synchro monster, with its defensive capabilities.
So how do you beat these monsters when your opponent can pull them out of the Extra Deck at almost any time? Here's a few of my top picks for dealing with Synchro monsters:
Compulsory Evacuation Device
What can I say? This card is simple, effective, chainable and against Synchro Monsters, instantly nets you quite a bit of card advantage. I have fond memories of playing against Stardust Dragons and Dark Paladins and watching the expressions on my opponent's faces when I flip this. Stardust can do nothing about it, and this is still a great card when facing down other threats.
Threatening Roar/Waboku
These two cards were very popular last format. And they still are now, for good reasons. Waboku is often used in conjunction with Gladiator Beasts, but it can help protect an important monster you have for one turn. The same goes for Threatening Roar. For most players, one turn is usually all they need to pull something from up their sleeves. Got a Smashing Ground but don't want to lose your monster before using it? Use Waboku and Threatening Roar to protect it for one turn, then smash that Synchro Monster to the graveyard. These two are also great for protecting against sudden unexpected onslaughts. Synchro Monsters can pop up at the most unexpected times, and these will help counter those nasty surprises.
Bottomless Trap Hole
Well, this is pretty self-explanatory. Big Synchro pops up, you send it plummeting down a bottomless hole. Good fun.
Phoenix Wing Wind Blast
Like Compulsory Evacuation Device, this card instantly nets you advantage once you activate this. Target a Synchro monster, and it spins back to the Extra Deck. And this is also great for slowing your opponent down. Spin a monster away and force your opponent to draw it again next turn!
Chaos Sorceror
This card used to be on the forbidden list for a good reason. It's easy to summon, and can get rid of any monster on the field. And it's doesn't even go to the trouble of destroying the monster, allowing it to bypass Stardust and many other protective spell/traps.
Book of Moon
Many big monsters out there right now have huge attack stats but laughable defences. Use that to your advantage - use this to catch them on their weak side, or flip potential synchro materials face down.
There are many ways of countering Synchro Monsters. I've only listed a few of my personal favorites here, but keep experimenting with different cards, and you're bound to find a few gems which were previously overlooked.
